TASC Rallies Over 1000 at White House Against Coup Attempt in Turkey

July 17, 2016 – Washington DC – Over 1000 Turkish Americans and supporters of democracy rallied at the White House against the attempted coup of July 15, 2016, under 100-degree weather. Co-Chairman of the Turkish American National Steering Committee (TASC), Gunay Evinch made opening remarks:
“We gather today at the White House to show our solidarity with the people of Turkey, who bravely resisted a military coup. On every day of school my children pledge allegiance to America. A part of that pledge which I am sure we can all empathize with today, reads: ‘one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all’. Our brothers and sisters in Turkey want the same and are owed the same.”
Dozens of tourists joined Evinch in the pledge and applauded the event.  Evinch ended his speech by reciting from the Turkish pledge: “to protect our children, to respect our elders.” He concluded, “To respect our elders who sacrificed for a sovereign and progressive Turkey, is to protect our children by protecting their democracy.”
Other speakers included, Dr. Jonathan Brown of Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, Dr. Yasar Colak who serves as Cleric of the Diyanet Center of America, Mustafa Tuncer who serves as President of MUSIAD, and Murat Guzel who serves as advisor to Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
Muslims leaders, including Nihad Awad of the Council of American-Islamic Relations, Naim Baig of the Islamic Circle of Muslim American Organizations, Usama Jamal of U.S. Council of Muslims Organizations, Ahmed Shehata of the Egypt Institution for Democracy, Mir Massum of the Bengali American Association, as well as speakers from the Syrian, Iraqi, Kurdish, and Libyan American communities, universally expressed that the Turkish people’s successful resistance to the coup attempt was hope for the Muslim world who have yet to break the chains of military and theological dictatorships supported by the energy policies of the West.
